My corner of the web

EverNote

Posted by geetarista December 29, 2005

As I’m nearing my return to school, I have been searching for the best note-taking tools that will be most beneficial to me. I am a very organized person, so I’ve been looking for something that is compact, very portable, digital, and efficient. In my previous post, I found a TiddlyWiki to be a very possible choice. I have found another program that looks quite promising as well: EverNote. It is a very small, very fast note taking platform that has many nice features and integration with the web. There are plugins for both Firefox and IE that allow you to copy content from the web straight to your notes with a link back to the source. The program, like I said before, is surprisingly fast. Embedding pictures is very easy. I still have yet to make a decision, but Evernote and TiddlyWiki are tied right now for #1.

Wordpress 2.0 Upgrade

Posted by geetarista December 28, 2005

Today I upgraded to the final release of Wordpress 2.0.  Luckily, I was able to upgrade without any problems.  Since I already had the beta, nothing new has really changed, but I’m glad to just be on the public (safe) release.  I’m happy with Wordpress right now, but if they keep up the work that their doing, I will be quite impressed with future releases of their beautiful software.

TiddlyWiki is my friend

Posted by geetarista December 23, 2005

While surfing the internet a couple of months ago, as I always do, I found an interesting site that showed a non-linear wiki using javascript to enable the wiki to load sections without reloading the page. I thought it was a neat idea, but it hadn’t been developed enough to where I thought I could use it. But last week, I found a site that showed the new improvements and showed that it could be very useful for taking notes or in a journal. As I took a gander at the new features and the capabilities of it, I was quite impressed. I think this is a wonderful idea that I will be definitely be using when I go back to school here in a few weeks. Some of the better features are these:

  • The entire journal is kept within one file–no databases, no mess
  • The interface is almost like a blog, in that every time you open up a “tiddler”, which is like a post, it opens up under the one you were just reading
  • The script is very fast–no waiting for pages to load
  • It’s still a wiki, which means fast editing and easy linking between tiddlers

Hopefully, more plugins/macros will become available and, along with AJAX, this may be the new form of bloggin, note taking, and journal writing. Check out my links for TiddlyWiki for more information.

Introduction to Blogging

Posted by geetarista December 02, 2005

Today I found a wonderful article in the Wordpress Codex called Introduction to Blogging. I myself am a beginning blogger and I have had to learn most of this stuff by looking around and finding what other people have done. So for anyone who is starting out in the blogging world, I recommend looking at this little article to help you to get on your feet. It isn’t a complete manual, but it will give you some definitions and ideas on how to make the most of your blog.

National Grants Scam

Posted by geetarista December 01, 2005

Since May, I have been receiving phone calls from a company called National Grants. Each time they call, they try to get me to give them money so I can receive a free, guaranteed government grant for $8,000. Well, back in May, I went through with it because I didn’t have a whole lot of money and it sounded cool. I thought, “Hey, if I get $8K from them, I’d gladly pay $300. Well, they told me it would be a few weeks for them to take the money out. I thought that I would get the money first, and that later I would have to pay the fee later. That makes sense, right? Well, a few days later, they took $300 out of my checking account, and I had a bunch of overdraft fees because I wasn’t checking my account. I talked to my bank and they said that they couldn’t contact the company. From that point, I knew I was in big trouble. I opened up a new account and locked up the other so if they tried again, my bank wouldn’t accept it. |inline
